HIV/AIDS Barometer

HIV/AIDS Barometer

Mail & Guardian (Johannesburg) - June 29, 2001

Estimated worldwide HIV infections 4.13pm, Thursday June 28: 42 164 219 Still questioning: President Thabo Mbeki told a media briefing in Washington this week that his personal beliefs on whether HIV causes Aids are irrelevant.

He said although the link was "what the scientists say", ordinary medical textbooks showed many factors could damage human immune systems.

Talking or action? The United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/Aids came and went in New York this week. The session produced a declaration including timetables and targets for restraining the HIV/Aids epidemic. These include a 20% cut in the number of HIV-infected infants by 2005, by ensuring that 80% of pregnant women have information on HIV.

Follow the money: UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told a press conference in New York that he expected more debate over control of the estimated $9-billion global fund to combat Aids than over allocating the money. Ideological and cultural differences had already become very public with a dispute over the inclusion of homosexuals in debates and mention in the final declaration of homosexuals, drug users and prostitutes. Men who have sex with men were referred to as being at risk due to "sexual practices" while sex workers would be at risk due to "livelihood".
