HIV/Aids Barometer

Mail & Guardian (Johannesburg) - June 15, 2001

Estimated worldwide infections: 2.11pm Thursday June14: 41 961 386

New chair: Professor Jerry Coovadia became the first incumbent of the new Victor Daitz Foundation Chair in HIV/Aids at the University of Natal medical school. Coovadia, an internationally recognised doctor and researcher, will establish a centre to consolidate and develop Aids research.

Building beginnings: A new clinic dedicated to training medical personnel from across Africa in the treatment of HIV/Aids is being built in Uganda. The clinic is the product of a collaboration between international Aids experts and is being funded by the Pfizer Foundation. The aim is to train up to 80 doctors a year who will in turn pass on their skills when they return to their homes. It is also expected to treat up to 50 000 patients a year.

Time bound: Lack of understanding about Western time is one reason why Africa should not consider use of anti-retroviral therapy, according to the head of the United States Agency for International Development. Andrew Natsios has been reported in the New York Times as saying that most Africans have never seen a watch or clock, and would not be able to follow drug-taking regimes.

Law making: The Kenyan Parliament passed the Industrial Property Bill which assists the country in cutting drug costs. The law will allow parallel importation of brand name drugs from other countries where they may be cheaper, as well as the manufacture or importation of generic drugs. Pharmaceutical companies said they will not contest the law.

Testing: Canada this week announced that HIV tests will be mandatory for all immigrants and refugees. HIV positive immigrants will be admitted on a case by case basis.
