In war against AIDS, South losing ground: Report finds deaths outpace funds, Tribune's Dahleen Glanton writes

ATLANTA-For almost a decade, AIDS activists have been trying to bring attention to the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases in the South. Now, in a report this week, they warn the disease has created a "catastrophic situation" in the region.

The South has long battled health disparities, but HIV/AIDS has been one of the most difficult to control, particularly in black and Latino communities which are disproportionately affected.

The number of AIDS deaths in the South rose 10.3 percent from 2001 to 2006, while the number went down in the rest of the country, according to the Southern AIDS Coalition.

Despite the increase, activists said, the South received the smallest amount of funding for education, treatment, housing and other services.
