France seeks to free figures in AIDS case

Chicago Tribune - July 23, 2007

LIBYA - France's first lady visited Libya on Sunday and met its leader, Moammar Gadhafi, to press for the repatriation of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor imprisoned for allegedly infecting Libyan children with the AIDS virus, French media and Libyan officials said.

The magazine Le Point reported on its Web site that Cecilia Sarkozy and Claude Gueant, President Nicolas Sarkozy's chief of staff, left Sunday for Libya. The report said the French government hopes to fly the medics to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. Le Point cited a source close to Libyan authorities.

The six were initially sentenced to death after they were convicted of deliberately infecting more than 400 children with HIV, a charge the six deny. Their death sentences were commuted to life in prison.

Libyan officials confirmed the meeting.
