They're offered by a non-profit company, Monkeybiz, which gives disadvantaged South African women, many of them infected with HIV, a means of making a living.
About 450 women from the Cape Town area are provided with beads and lessons, then can work from home at their own pace. The result of their labors is one-of-a-kind beaded artwork with an African flavor. The animals include colorful stylized dolls, antelopes, elephants, giraffes and penguins (our favorite). The pictures of various scenes can be framed to make an interesting wall hanging.
Prices range from $23 for a small penguin to $38 for dolls, $62 for pictures and $82 for a large animal. The Monkeybiz Bead Project pieces are available at Notice, 2057 Green Bay Rd., Highland Park (847-432-1212).
For more information on the project, go to monkeybiz.co.za/about.html.
