The Italian news agency ANSA said the show Sunday also included a video clip in which the pope and former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi were shown alongside Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.
"An Artfully-Created Scandal" read a headline Monday in Avvenire, the Italian bishops' daily.
The crowd of 70,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium was dotted with VIPs, ANSA said, including director Pedro Almodovar, actress Penelope Cruz, Lenny Kravitz and heroes of Italy's World Cup-winning soccer team Francesco Totti and Alessandro del Piero.
