HIV fund targets Libyan children

Chicago Tribune - December 25, 2005

PARIS, FRANCE - Libya, Bulgaria, the U.S. and the European Union have agreed to set up a fund to support hundreds of Libyan children who were infected with HIV while in the hospital, Bulgarian officials said Friday.

While the agreement made no mention of six Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor who have been sentenced to death for infecting the children, it could pave the way for a commutation of their sentences or their release once Libya's highest court considers their final appeal Sunday. The court's decision is not expected until January.

The six nurses and doctor were arrested in 1999 after HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, spread through the wards where they worked at Al Fateh children's hospital in the coastal city of Benghazi.

Last year, they were sentenced to death by firing squad for deliberately spreading the virus.
