Suspect in bat beating has bail set at $350,000

Chicago Tribune - January 11, 2005

COOK COUNTY -- Bail was set Monday at $350,000 for an Elgin man charged with attempted murder after police said he used a baseball bat last month to beat an Arlington Heights resident as he talked to his mother on a cell phone.

Sergio R. Lagunas, 22, of the 500 block of Willard Avenue, was charged Saturday after the 24-year-old victim identified him in a lineup, Arlington Heights Police Cmdr. Jerry Lambert said. Lagunas was arrested after the beating on Dec. 10, but police lacked evidence to charge him at the time, Lambert said.

Lagunas was turned over to Elgin police, who charged him with criminal transmission of HIV.

After Arlington Heights police learned that Lagunas was released on the HIV charge, officers arrested him.
