DuPage offers a few flu shots: Recipients must meet strict criteria

Chicago Tribune - October 19, 2004
John Biemer, Tribune staff reporter

The DuPage County Health Department will offer a limited supply of influenza vaccinations to county residents meeting strict eligibility guidelines at the department's four public health centers beginning Wednesday, officials announced.

Only adults and children 9 and older who are in high-risk groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control will be served at this time, Executive Director Leland Lewis said. Appointments must be made in advance.

Residents seeking flu shots will be screened to make sure they are in the following groups most at risk:

Adults 65 and older.

People 9 to 64 with chronic medical conditions, such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, cancer, HIV/AIDS and other immune-deficiency diseases.

Women who will be pregnant during flu season, typically November through April.

Children ages 9 to 18 on chronic aspirin therapy.

Health-care workers providing direct patient care.

Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of infants up to 6 months.

Vaccine is not available at this time for infants and children under 9, but it may become available later, officials said.

The cost of the vaccine is $20 and may be paid by Medicare Part B, check or cash. No Medicaid or credit cards will be accepted.

The limited quantity of flu vaccine has become available as the result of a partnership between the Health Department and Maxim Healthcare Services of Naperville, officials said. The Health Department had suspended its annual flu shot clinics after learning that its original vaccine manufacturer, Chiron Corp., will not be providing the vaccine this year.

Qualified residents should call their nearest DuPage County Public Health Center between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for appointments: the East Public Health Center in Lombard at 630-588-3905, the North Public Health Center in Addison at 630-682-7306, the Southeast Public Health Center in Westmont at 630-588-3923 or the West Public Health Center in Wheaton at 630-682-7588.
