Children's Advocate Marci Kaminsky: Others' kids are under her wing

Chicago Tribune - October 17, 2004
Devin Rose

"I have strong maternal feelings that extend far beyond my own family. I'm passionate about making life better for kids."

--Marci Kaminsky talked to Q about her work on the board of the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation.

Kaminsky, vice president of communications at USG in Chicago, wants to get the message out that CAAF is unique. Instead of simply dealing with kids who have AIDS or HIV, it also helps kids whose lives are affected by the disease because someone in their life has it. The group helps with everything from renovating playgrounds to providing phone service in poorer homes.

"One of my favorite stories," said Kaminsky, the mother of two girls, "is about a California community where kids whose parents had AIDS couldn't play soccer after school because they couldn't get there. CAAF provided a van that picked up kids and got them to the games."

Kaminsky can envision a day in which such a group isn't needed. Because pregnant women who take an AIDS cocktail of drugs in their first trimester can drastically reduce the risk of passing along the disease, she said, "pretty soon, we're going to get rid of this awful disease once and for all."
