IKEA joins UNICEF to fight HIV/AIDS in Angola, Uganda

Chicago Tribune - August 3, 2003
J.I. Adkins Jr

IKEA, the international home-furnishings retailer, and the United Nations Children's Fund have launched a fundraising effort to assist African children in need.

Through August 2004, IKEA stores worldwide will donate $2 from the sale of every $6.99 BRUM teddy bear to benefit children in Angola and Uganda.

John Zurcher, an IKEA spokesman, said the retailer expects to raise $400,000 to support UNICEF's "Children's Right to Play" programs. UNICEF uses play-based programs to teach youngsters about HIV/AIDS.

In Angola, UNICEF programs target an estimated 1.3 million children who do not attend school. The financial assistance from IKEA is expected to reach 80,000 street children. The IKEA funds will also assist UNICEF programs in Uganda, which has been devastated by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

IKEA has more than 180 stores in 31 countries, including its store in Schaumburg and 16 others across the United States.

Created by designers Ivar Ledang and Nanna Ivarsson, the BRUM teddy bear is about 12 1/2 inches tall, comes in white, yellow and blue, and mimics IKEA's PS BRUM children's armchair. The bear is part of the new IKEA PS collection for children. It is available at the Schaumburg store, 1800 E. McConnor Pkwy., 847-969-9700, or from the IKEA catalog.
