The average grant was $15,000 said Mark Ishaug, executive director for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. Ishaug said the money will be used by some of the 55 agenciesto start or keep programs that target hard-to-reach populations and to fund programs such as needle exchange.
"One of the great things about our private grant-making program is that it allows agencies to do innovative programs that are often not funded or fundable under government guidelines," Ishaug said.
"Some of the activities and programs might be considered more controversial but we believe that they will really stem the spread of HIV," Ishaug said. He added that the foundation received funds from individuals and corporate organizations.
One group that received money, Working For Togetherness, a South Side HIV and AIDS prevention agency, targets drug users and provides them with condoms and bleach kits to clean needles, said Tameeka Nelson, an agency administrative assistant. Nelson said the agency received $5,000 and will use it to expand prevention outreach.
