But the riders will get more exercise next month when they set out on the 300-mile Heartlanders Opening People's Eyes (HOPE) Ride to benefit Canticle Ministries in Wheaton, AIDS Care Network in Rockford and AIDS Project Quad Cities. The trip starts July 17 in the Quad Cities, goes through Rockford and ends July 20 in Wheaton.
The ride carries on the spirit of the Minneapolis to Chicago Heartland AIDS Ride that ended a seven-year run last summer.
Brad Ogilvie, director of Canticle Ministries, hopes those who are HIV positive make up at least 20 percent of the 75 to 100 riders on the trek. That, he said, will allow them a positive self-image and a sense of empowerment after they finish.
Ogilvie also wants it to create community awareness.
"We want to break down some of those barriers. We want to go through towns and show people what we can do," Ogilvie said.
