Weather draws crowds to charity walks

Chicago Tribune - September 30, 2002

CHICAGO -- So many people turned out for charity walks on a balmy fall Sunday that they were almost bumping into each other on the crowded lakefront, officials said.

Thousands attended three separate events to raise money for AIDS, asthma and diabetes research.

More than 9,000 people packed the museum campus for the annual 5K AIDS Run/Walk, and several thousand walkers for the American Lung Association and American Diabetes Association wound through Lincoln Park.

"Today just turned out to be the day for the charity walk," said Liz Zweigle of the American Lung Association, which helped raise $100,000 in pledges for asthma education and research programs.

Walks to benefit asthma research also took place in Schaumburg, Vernon Hills and Batavia, attracting more than 1,000 participants, Zweigle said.

The Diabetes Walk attracted several hundred more to the lakefront.

"It was just a wonderful day for it. It really brought a lot of people out to enjoy one of the last good days of summer," Zweigle said.

The AIDS walk, in its second year, raised more than $300,000, said spokesman Tony Abruscato.
