Another AIDS toll

Chicago Tribune - April 24, 2002
T. Shawn Taylor, Staylor@tribune.com.

By 2005, nearly 30 percent of South Africa's labor force will be HIV positive, according to an annual report by the South African Press Association on labor relations and employee benefits used by government, academic, corporate and financial institutions there.

"The pandemic will take a dramatic toll on the most productive members of the population, those in their 20s, 30s and 40s," the report stated. It also said that by 2010, a million South Africans could have full-blown AIDS and 6 million would already have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

Julianne Malveaux, an economist based in Washington, said the impact of AIDS on the most advanced industrial economy in Africa will create a labor market drain "of catastrophic proportions."

"(AIDS') rapid infusion into the population creates a Russian roulette effect," Malveaux said. "It really speaks to why the government should be ahead of the curve, not behind the curve in terms of AIDS prevention."
