Government to step up AIDS battle

Chicago Tribune - February 9, 2002

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA -- President Thabo Mbeki committed his government Friday to an intensified fight against South Africa's rampant AIDS epidemic but said the government would not give in to pressure to make AIDS drugs available nationwide in state hospitals.

In an upbeat state-of-the-nation address to parliament, Mbeki trumpeted the strides South Africa has made since apartheid ended with all-race elections in 1994, noting that more progress was made in 2001.

"What I know and can say without any equivocation is that during the past year, our country has, in real terms, and within its means, moved further forward toward a society free of poverty and underdevelopment," he said.

Mbeki, a British-trained economist elected in 1999, vowed to boost economic growth efforts, widen access to welfare grants, improve education and reduce high crime levels. He stressed that fighting AIDS must go hand in hand with fighting poverty and malnutrition.

His government has been widely criticized for downplaying the AIDS epidemic and accused of providing inadequate treatment for AIDS sufferers in South Africa, where 4.7 million people are HIV positive.
