AIDS umbrella group awards $1.1 million

The Chicago Tribune - June 30, 1999

CHICAGO -- The AIDS Foundation of Chicago awarded $1.1 million Tuesday to 57 organizations that provide HIV/AIDS care and services. The awards, in amounts from $5,000 to $50,000, are coveted by agencies because they give them choices in deciding how best to spend the money.

The grants arrive at a time when private and foundation funding is becoming more difficult for agencies across the country to attract, according to Paul DiDonato, executive director for Funders Concerned About AIDS.

Mark Ishaug, of the AIDS Foundation, said that, although money is harder to come by, the agency has had a good year. "Corporations and foundations were extraordinarily generous," he said.

Virgie Taylor, who coordinates the food pantry at Project Vida, at 2659 S. Kedvale Ave., said she hopes to use the $10,000 grant the agency received to help clients and the pantry together.

"We really need the money," Taylor said. "(Clients) really don't have transportation to get their food. Some are so weak, and to have to carry those bags of groceries is difficult."

Lance Toma, director of psychosocial services for Horizons Community Services, said the agency plans to use the $15,000 it received to fund its South Side drop-in program for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth in the Grand Boulevard community.
