The Chicago Tribune, Thursday, November 13, 1997, Page 2

China had 7,253 reported cases of the human immunodeficiency virus by the end of June and faces a serious challenge in controlling the spread of the virus that causes AIDS, the China Daily said on Thursday.

China's official figures show the country had 5,990 reported carriers of HIV at the end of 1996.

"Data from the Ministry of Health suggest that China, like other countries, is facing a serious challenge with the spread of HIV/AIDS," the newspaper said.

Chinese and Western health officials have said the actual number of HIV carriers could be as high as 50,000-100,000.

The number of sexually transmitted disease cases in China had risen by about 9 percent to 182,000 in the first six months of this year compared with the same period in 1996, the newspaper said.

China registered 398,000 STD cases in 1996, a rise of 12 percent from the year before, it said.
