State public health officials released figures Wednesday showing there were 1,186 AIDS/HIV deaths in the state in 1996, down nearly 21 percent from the 1,494 deaths reported the prior year.
The state statistics mirror the national trend. Illinois Public Health Director John Lumpkin attributes the downturn in part to new drug therapy. Potent combinations of antiretroviral drugs have been shown to slow the progress of AIDS. But Lumpkin said the drug cocktails don't work for everyone. "Recent studies have found the drugs may be failing in about half of those treated."
