AIDS Agency Loses Rent-Free Home At Mall

Chicago Tribune (CT) - THURSDAY, September 25, 1997 Edition: NORTHWEST SPORTS FINAL Section: METRO NORTHWEST Page: 7 Word Count: 293
Suzy Frisch, Tribune Staff Writer.

An organization that provides food and other resources to people with HIV and AIDS in suburban Chicago has been told that it must vacate the desperately needed warehouse space it has occupied free in a Rolling Meadows mall storefront.

The HIV Coalition, or HIVCO, provides resources such as food, support and education to people with AIDS and HIV. Its service area consists of suburban Cook, Lake, Kane and McHenry Counties.

Earlier this week, the new owners of the Meadows Town Mall in Rolling Meadows told the coalition's administrators that they must leave the mall in 45 days, said Robert Fickes, HIVCO's executive director. Fickes said the mall has donated his organization's space since May 1996.

The bad news comes when the coalition is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Fickes and his staff now must devote time and energy to finding new space by Nov. 1 instead of reveling in the coalition's achievements.

"It's an urgent need, and our preference is to find a benefactor so we can move into donated space," Fickes said. "We are reaching out to the community to see if we can find another individual or organization."

The floundering Meadows Town Mall, at Golf and Algonquin Roads, had plenty of empty space to give away. The former owners, Bradley Real Estate, allowed the coalition to use 11,000 square feet rent-free for its Hand-to-Hand food distribution program.

But Bradley Real Estate sold the mall in August to Koll/Bradford Inc. Officials there did not return several phone calls. They have made no announcements about their future plans for the mall.

Many of the HIV and AIDS patients at the Open Door Clinic in Elgin depend on the group for a monthly supply of food, said Hugh Epping, clinic executive director.
