TEXT: WAUKEGAN - A planned residential treatment facility for HIV-AIDS patients with substance-abuse problems was given a lukewarm reception by future neighbors Thursday night at a community meeting hosted by the facility's sponsors.

The Harbor program, which is administered by the Alexian Brothers of America, recently bought a former boarding house at 826 North Ave. on Waukegan's north side to house 10 to 12 HIV-AIDS patients with substance-abuse problems. Many neighbors, however, complained they weren't consulted before the purchase.

Tim McCormick, chief executive officer of Alexian Brothers Bonaventure House Center for Assisted Living, questioned neighbors' fears that the facility would attract a dangerous element.

"We're not bringing addicts into the community, or AIDS patients into the community," McCormick said. "From what you've told us, they've always been there at the boarding house. But with this facility, they will be there under supervision and with the intention of recovering."
