AIDS Walk Panel Tries to Steer 2 Grants to Minority Care

The AIDS Walk Chicago board of directors is seeking proposals from HIV/AIDS care service providers run by minorities based in minority communities for two $37,500 grants, it was announced Monday.

It also has decided to increase the amount of AIDS Walk proceeds it gives the AIDS Foundation of Chicago to $340,000--up from $200,000 last year--for grants to service agencies in minority communities, if the eighth AIDS Walk meets its $2 million fundraising goal.

The decisions were made to ensure money raised would serve the African-American and Hispanic communities, where the virus currently is spreading most rapidly. The rest of the money will go to its 12 founding agencies and pay administrative expenses for the annual fundraiser.

The two grants will be offered to determine who should share $75,000 made available when the board came under attack for no longer having community-based, minority-run service providers among its members.

The Kupona Network, the only such agency among the founding members, resigned from the AIDS Walk board and dissolved earlier this year leaving a predominantly white board comprised mostly of the executive directors from 12 member agencies.

While those agencies provide services to minorities, critics have argued there is a need for minority voices on the board to make it responsive to the community.
