The 60,000 walkers and their sponsors in AIDS Walk Chicago, the Midwest's largest fundraiser for the treatment of AIDS patients, should surpass last year's record of $1.6 million, event organizers said Monday.

So far, $1.4 million in pledges and corporate support have been collected since the Sept. 17 event. By the end of the year, the amount should exceed last year's total, said Paul Hook, executive director of AIDS Walk Chicago. That would bring the amount raised since the annual event began in 1990 to $6 million.

As federal funding for those afflicted with AIDS diminishes, events such as AIDS Walk Chicago have helped provide a larger share of the money for treatment and educational programs, Hook said. Almost as important is the symbolic nature of such fundraisers.

"For people who are impacted directly by the virus, this show of support is critically important," Hook said. "In AIDS care, there isn't a lot that we get to celebrate, but this is a visible way to show that people really care."

Participants, who were sponsored by one or more of the 1,000 churches, schools, corporations and other involved organizations, walked 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) along the lakefront from Monroe Harbor to McCormick Place and back.

About 70 percent of the funds will go directly to 13 Chicago-based agencies. Some of those funds will go to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, which will dispense the money to other service providers.

The remaining 30 percent is used to finance the event.

In 1994, each of the 13 agencies received $67,500 and an additional $247,000 went to the foundation.

This year, about $70,000 each will go to the agencies and about $250,000 to the foundation.

The agencies that will receive funds are AIDS Alternative Health Project, AIDS Pastoral Care Network, Chicago House and Social Service Agency, Chicago Women's AIDS Project, Cook County HIV Primary Care Center, Harbor Home Health, Horizons Community Services, Howard Brown Health Center, Kupona Network, Michael Reese Education and Research Foundation, Open Hand Chicago, Stop AIDS, and Rafael Center of Travelers and Immigrants Aid.
