E-18 Corp. Releases Protectus Management Profile on Jack Dillard, Inventor of the Protectus Safety Syringe

Business Wire - October 09, 2009

Physicist by Training and Prolific Engineer/Inventor, Jack Dillard Represents Protectus' Core Technology and Serves as VP of Operations and Chief Operating Officer

MINNEAPOLIS - E-18 Corp. (OTCBB:ETEN), through its wholly owned subsidiary, SquareOne Medical, Inc., doing business as Protectus Medical Devices ("Protectus Medical Devices"), today provides a management profile of Jack Dillard, Executive VP of Operations, Chief Operating Officer and Director.

Jack Dillard is a co-founder of Protectus Medical Devices. A physicist by training, he holds numerous U.S. and international patents and he is responsible for the original design of the innovative, self-sheathing Protectus Safety Syringe.

"Jack Dillard represents the central core of the Protectus Safety Syringe technology. He is not only responsible for its revolutionary design, but also provides the innovation and expertise behind our numerous patent filings, current and future, and the sophisticated preparation for full-scale manufacturing of the finished product," said Dr. John Salstrom, President and CEO of Protectus Medical Devices. "Ever since the notion of a passive safety needle became his mission, Jack has been a relentless crusader, devoting countless hours to developing the technology and preparing for its penetration into the medical syringe market. Moreover, the Protectus technology has the flexibility to be adapted to the Company's other percutaneous products."

By employing highly effective, self-sheathing technology, the Protectus Safety Syringe has the potential to significantly reduce or obviate needlestick injuries that affect doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers, while also using design elements that keep costs competitive and make injections during medical visits as safe as possible.

Jack Dillard recalls the events that triggered his desire to design such a device:

"I first became aware of the serious problem of needlesticks when I read an article in the LA Times about a doctor being stuck by a needle and contracting HIV. The article contained shocking statistics in regards to the millions of needlestick injuries that occurred each year, and the billions in healthcare costs associated with the healthcare dilemma. I was convinced there must be a better solution than the current æsafety-syringes' on the market and began developing a design with effective safety features that would require no conscious action by the user to be deployed."

Believing the problem could be tackled in a similar fashion to the countless engineering or physics problems he had faced in the past, Jack Dillard conceived the initial design and refined it over the years until it evolved into the Protectus Safety Syringe.

Doctors and nurses in the field were consulted along every step of the process to make certain the device conformed to their needs. Working prototypes were designed for testing and further product refinement until the final design met all safety objectives.

Mr. Dillard, after many months of investigation, created a list of "Criteria of Acceptance" for the development of any safety syringe. This list of Criteria became the model for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) to petition the FDA to make safer needle devices mandatory and now serves as the model for OSHA. Once on the market with the Protectus safety syringe, OSHA can enforce the law that now exists in nearly all fifty states and at the federal level.

Jack Dillard continued, "One of the key aspects of our design centered on the problem of a regular helix, which wouldn't allow the sheath to fully contract due to its inherent shape. The solution was a non-uniform helix design created from a polycarbonate spring that allows full exposure of the needle, while simultaneously providing a way for the self-sheathing action to take effect immediately if intentional control of the device is lost."

Prior to his work on the Protectus Safety Syringe, Jack Dillard worked in a variety of engineering and design applications. He was formerly Executive Vice President for PJD Associates, a company he co-founded, with responsibilities for developing, patenting and bringing to commercial production several electronic monitoring devices for high-purity water for drinking and commercial use.

Jack Dillard also served as a Member of Technical Staff and Project Manager for Hughes Electronics, a Fortune 50 company, where he developed infrared imaging equipment/devices for military and scientific endeavors. Mr. Dillard received a presidential appointment to The U.S. Military Academy at West Point while serving in the U.S. Army. He completed his education at San Francisco State University with a B.S. in Physics.

The Protectus Medical Safety Syringe is designed to significantly reduce or eliminate accidental needlestick injuries that have plagued the healthcare workplace for decades. About E-18 Corp.

E-18 Corp., through its wholly owned subsidiary, SquareOne Medical, Inc., doing business as Protectus Medical Devices, develops and markets innovative safety medical percutaneous devices that, collectively, have the potential to dramatically reduce needlestick injuries for medical professionals worldwide. In the nearly $5 billion global hypodermic syringe market, the Protectus Safety Syringe, the Company's lead product, is the only fully automatic, self-sheathing hypodermic safety syringe that currently meets the functional definition of "Self-Sheathing" mandated by the U.S. Federal Government. None of the manufacturers of other devices on the market can make this claim. Protectus Medical Devices has successfully patented its automatic, self-sheathing hypodermic safety syringe product, and, based on the results of full comparison clinical trials, the Protectus Safety Syringe (formerly the SquareOne Safety Syringe) has received the required 510(k) permission from the U.S. FDA to manufacture and market the device in the U.S. More information about the Company may be found at www.protectusmedical.com.
