Macro International Awarded Contract to Serve as the Data Coordinating Center for CDC's HIV/AIDS Data

Business Wire - December 15, 2008

CALVERTON, Md.--Macro was recently awarded a contract with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention to be the Data Coordinating Center for the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) and the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP). This $4.7 million, 3-year contract enables Macro to accept, process, maintain, and archive data for two of CDC's largest HIV/AIDS surveillance systems.

The NHBS and MMP surveillance systems were launched as part of CDC's strategic plan to strengthen the capacity to monitor the HIV/AIDS epidemic nationwide. The NHBS and MMP surveillance systems monitor behaviors that place individuals at risk for contracting HIV and behaviors and clinical outcomes among individuals infected with HIV, respectively. NHBS focuses its efforts on three populations that have been found to be most at risk for contracting HIV: men who have sex with men, injection drug users, and at-risk heterosexuals. Each system operates on yearly data collection cycles. Collectively, they capture more than 22,500 records of data including HIV testing information. In addition, MMP collects over 135,000 abstraction records each cycle. The NHBS and MMP surveillance systems are currently operating in 25 cities and 26 states, respectively.

The goal of the Data Coordinating Center is to develop a data submission and monitoring application for each surveillance system that provides sites with user-friendly tools to manage participant tracking information, data collection schedules, data submissions, error resolutions, and reporting. The resulting system will produce timely data that can be used by CDC and the funded sites to inform programs on a national, state, and local level.

"The award of this contract to Macro adds another dimension to our extensive 25-year history of work in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention with CDC and other federal agencies, domestically and around the world," said Tonja Kyle, Macro's project director for the DCC. "The information collected by these surveillance systems is a critical component of CDC's HIV Prevention Strategic Plan. We look forward to providing CDC and their funded sites with the tools to meet CDC's strategic goals."
