BOULDER, Colo.--Webroot, a leading provider of security software for the consumer, enterprise and SMB markets, today announced the introduction of "The Webroot(R) Charitable Giving Program" for providing support to the areas of child safety, environmental stewardship and education. In honor of National AIDS Awareness day, Webroot is highlighting two beneficiaries of their program, "Bicycles for Humanity" and "BeadforLife."
"One of Webroot's core values is to take responsibility and be accountable," said Peter Watkins, CEO, Webroot. "As a business, Webroot is a successful company because of our ability to focus on what's important. For the group of individuals who make up this great company, the Webroot Charitable Giving Program helps us focus on what's important in the world around us - healthy children, the environment and education."
Committed to improving the world through employee involvement, volunteerism and financial investment, the Webroot Charitable Giving Program provides matching funds for employee donations, paid time off for volunteer efforts and quarterly grants to non-profit organizations whose mission aligns with Webroot's philanthropic focus on child safety, environmental stewardship and education. The first program came together to support the volunteer efforts of an employee.
A former Webroot employee and friends founded the first chapter of "Bicycles for Humanity" in the United States in September of 2007. Bicycles for Humanity provides bicycles to the world's poorest countries where other forms of transportation are unaffordable and the bicycle is an important tool in building a better life. Their simple aim is to raise funds, collect unwanted bicycles, and send them to reliable partners in developing countries. By achieving their goal, Bicycles for Humanity can build more sustainable initiatives and programs, mobilize and empower more of the world's poorest people, and improve the delivery of services by teachers, health care workers, and hasten the delivery of vital AIDS medications to its victims.
"Our goal was to form a bridge of community sharing between the Front Range of Colorado and healthcare workers serving those in need in Africa. We were inspired by the ability to marry personal interests and the desire to help those most marginalized in society," said Josh Pace, a founder of the Colorado chapter of Bicycles for Humanity. "We delivered our first load of bikes to Namibia last August and are getting our next round of activity underway. After seeing what a huge impact our 400 bikes had to that area, we are working extra hard to improve on our last experience and help that area of Africa which is extremely hard-hit by AIDS."
Webroot's other AIDS-related beneficiary is "BeadforLife", a group that partners with Ugandan women to lift their families out of poverty by creating and selling beaded jewelry made of recycled paper. The artists are a combination of refugees from Northern Uganda's brutal war and HIV positive mothers. All of the women BeadforLife works with were living on less than a dollar a day before they began making beads.
"BeadforLife" now has over 200 women in Uganda making the beads, necklaces and bracelets. The money the women earn goes directly into feeding their families, buying medicine, paying for school fees, and the start of small businesses. All profits from the sale of the beads are invested in projects that fight extreme poverty including health education, housing, and sustainable livelihood. "BeadforLife" strives to offers people opportunities and jobs, rather than handouts.
Webroot will be hosting a "BeadforLife" showing in their lobby at 2560 55th St. on Monday, December 1, starting at 9 a.m. The doors are open for anyone wanting to purchase jewelry in support of these women and their families. Both cash and credit cards will be gratefully accepted.
