Key West Fundraiser Appeals to Gay Community Ahead of Approaching Hurricane Wilma

Business Wire - October 18, 2005

KEY WEST, Fla.-- The annual Key West AIDS Help fundraiser is making a last minute appeal to the gay community for donations. After two hurricanes the efforts are in bad shape, causing concern over funding for HIV infected patient's housing, health care.

Now to add insult to injury, forecasters expect Hurricane Wilma to track near Key West by Saturday. The highest point in Key West is 13 feet above sea level, so evacuations usually come within 72 hours of any impending storm.

"We need your help now, please!" said Helen "Redd" Smith, candidate for Queen of Fantasy Fest (www.reddforqueen.com). Our only hope is to request donations outside of this hard hit community. The timing for these repeated hurricanes could not have been worse. We need donations desperately."

Hurricane Rita's pass was barely reported by the media, yet storm surge flooded 100 homes and caused one death. This caused a massive slowdown in the usually brisk and generous gay community support during the fundraising period. Now a third hurricane in as many months threaten the island again dashing any hopes of adding to existing totals.

AIDS HELP Inc., is a 501c non profit, community based organization providing case managed health care, housing, food, counseling and support services for HIV infected residents residing in Key West and the Florida Keys. Government cutbacks forced the organization to come up with fundraising ideas.

"We would like to request donations of any kind, however small. Every penny counts," said Smith. "Maybe we can find some corporate sponsors to help us fill the gaps, and perhaps some folks still have a little extra they can give. If this storm hits, our fundraising will grind to a halt. We want to raise as much money as possible, so please help now ahead of time."
