Dr. Lamine Ba, Ambassador of Senegal, who recently learned about NeedleZap(R) and has already endorsed the product to the Senegalese Ministry of Health, was integral in the organization of the meeting. According to the most recent report from the United Nations, an estimated 25 million people are infected with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa. Senegal, in contrast, has done well in its fight to limit the spread of HIV/AIDS. The country has an infection rate of approximately 2 percent, one of the lowest on the African continent. For that reason, Dr. Ba felt strongly that other members of the African diplomatic community should learn about NeedleZap(R).
"To be effective against curtailing the spread of HIV/AIDS, you have to look at all the root causes," said Dr. Ba, E Med's Guest of Honor at the event. "The re-use of contaminated needles is just one of many problems African countries have to combat if progress is to be made against this deadly disease. That's why it's important to hold this forum where the benefits of NeedleZap(R) can be explained and demonstrated."
According to Dr. Ba, other benefits of NeedleZap(R) important to use in Africa include the ease of use, low per unit cost and availability of a solar-powered model.
"Some recent studies indicate that as many as 60 percent of the HIV infections in Africa are due to the re-use of contaminated needles," said Global Marketing Group (GMG) spokesperson Marty DuBois. GMG is one of E Med's distribution partners in Africa. "That is why we believe NeedleZap(R) can help prevent accidental or intentional re-use of contaminated needles in Africa and we applaud Dr. Ba for taking the lead in introducing NeedleZap(R) to other African diplomats."
NeedleZap(R) is currently in 22 hospitals and clinics in Uganda and in use at 12 of the same in Ghana. E Med has received positive feedback from the medical community and anticipates additional acceptance in response to the November 19th meeting.
