Skyscape Medical Solutions Help HIV/AIDS Treatment in East Africa: Leading Provider of Mobile Solutions for Healthcare Helps Doctors at First Major HIV/AIDS Treatment and Training Center in East Africa'

Business Wire - July 10, 2003

HUDSON, Mass.-- Doctors in Uganda and Kenya, whom until now have been battling epidemics like AIDS with limited resources, are turning to new technology to give them the information they need to help save lives. AIDS afflicts 5.3 million people in the world, 3.8 million of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. President Bush will be highlighting the $15 billion United States AIDS initiative during his trip to Africa this week, which includes a July 11 visit to Uganda.

Skyscape, Inc., the leading provider of interactive, intelligent mobile solutions for the healthcare community, today announced that it donated 50 Skyscape-powered Palm handhelds to the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care & Prevention in Africa, the first major HIV/AIDS treatment and training center in East Africa.

"Skyscape's donation is particularly appreciated because up-to-date medical references are prohibitively expensive and deteriorate rapidly in the humid tropical climate," said Naoko Fujii, Executive Director of the Academic Alliance. "Our trainees were thrilled by the Skyscape handheld computers and their usefulness since handheld computers are a luxury that few ever imagine using."

Skyscape's medical references, powered by its smARTlink(TM) technology, will be used by doctors in Africa to treat patients and save lives. Skyscape's patented smARTlink technology enables quick, easy and intuitive use of various data sources simultaneously. With Skyscape, physicians can diagnose illnesses, determine treatment, prescribe medication, identify drug interactions, calculate dosages, and perform all necessary steps involved with quality patient care wherever they are using their handheld device.

"Skyscape felt that this was a unique opportunity to support a project that is building a center that is badly needed in Africa," said RJ Mathew, Skyscape vice president of marketing. "Since there is currently no cure for the deadly disease, without building training and treatment infrastructure, we cannot even begin to teach prevention to stop the spread of AIDS in Africa or other developing countries."

Stemming the Tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa

The Academic Alliance for AIDS Care & Prevention in Africa is the first major HIV/AIDS treatment and training center designed to train Africa's health professionals on the latest treatment and prevention options for the African population. Until now, African physicians have had to travel to the United States or Europe for special HIV/AIDS training. The new center will allow trainees from all over Africa to attend the programs and return home to train others in the fight against AIDS.

At least 80 clinicians will be trained each year at the center. A major investment is being made in a modern laboratory that will enable African patients to access the most modern diagnostics and drug treatments. The center will establish new standards for the care and treatment of AIDS to be shared throughout the continent. The center will provide treatment to as many as 50,000 HIV/AIDS patients per year.

The Academic Alliance for AIDS Care & Prevention in Africa is a partnership of leading North American and Ugandan infectious diseases experts, government agencies, international and local organizations, the Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation and private corporations. Uganda has been widely praised for the strides it has made in fighting the AIDS epidemic. The country's political will to control AIDS and established medical infrastructure makes Uganda a key location for this Skyscape partnership to succeed.
