Calypte Biomedical Partners with Planned Parenthood Federation of America to Fight the Spread of HIV

Business Wire - May 22, 2003

ALAMEDA, Calif.--Planned Parenthood Federation, the nation's largest voluntary reproductive health care organization, and Calypte Biomedical Corporation, the developer and marketer of the only two FDA-approved HIV-1 antibody tests that can be used on urine samples, as well as an FDA-approved serum HIV-1 antibody Western blot supplemental test, today announced their "joint efforts" to help fight the spread of HIV.

Calypte and Planned Parenthood Federation are working together to develop education and training materials, patient awareness materials and a customized testing service to facilitate increased and easier access to urine-based HIV testing.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America provides comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services, advocates public policies that guarantee the rights and ensures access to such services, provides educational programs, and promotes research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care. Planned Parenthood operates approximately 875 health centers in 49 states and Washington, D.C., and serves nearly five million men, women and teenagers every year.

"All individuals worldwide have the right to nondiscriminatory, confidential access to the full range of voluntary reproductive health care services that are proven safe and effective, which includes the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases," said Dr. Vanessa Cullins, Planned Parenthood's Vice-President for Medical Affairs.

"With HIV transmission through heterosexual sex rapidly growing for women and particularly younger women in their teens, urine testing offers a simple and non-invasive means of testing that is more acceptable to many people than having blood drawn. The ability to screen for HIV, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases from the same urine specimen is an added convenience for both our clients and our healthcare providers."

Nancy Katz, Calypte's President and CEO, stated, "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with Planned Parenthood Federation to address the spread of HIV/AIDS. This relationship presents Calypte with an excellent opportunity to further expand the awareness of and access to our urine-based HIV testing. Independent studies have indicated that more people will voluntarily be tested for HIV if urine is offered as an alternative to blood testing. Both Calypte and Planned Parenthood Federation share a common goal of increasing the number of people who are voluntarily tested and are aware of their HIV status."
