American Foundation for AIDS Research Again Named One of America's 100 Best Charities by Worth Magazine

Business Wire - December 13, 2002

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 2002--For the second consecutive year, the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) was named one of "America's 100 Best Charities" by Worth magazine.

There are over 850,000 nonprofits in the United States, and amfAR was one of only 13 national health organizations that Worth ultimately selected as most deserving of philanthropic support in its article "To Give Well, Give Wisely."

"We are honored to be included in Worth magazine's annual '100 Best Charities' issue for the second year in a row," said amfAR's Chief Executive Officer, Jerome J. Radwin. "I believe this distinction reflects our dedication to fostering and championing innovation in the foundation's programs to fight HIV/AIDS."

In its December 2002 issue, Worth reports: "Since 1985, amfAR has funded AIDS research. Its grantees have made major breakthroughs, including synthesizing the precursor to T-20 (also known as Fuzeon), a drug likely to win FDA approval soon. Current research projects include identifying new treatment options for patients who have developed a resistance to existing drugs and developing vaccines and microbicides. Asia is expected to be the next epicenter of AIDS, and amfAR is pushing for improvements in the health care infrastructure there and in medical providers' knowledge about AIDS. The new amfAR Global Link report, the first international compendium of HIV/AIDS clinical trials, is available online."

"We hope that Worth's examination and findings about our organization will encourage others to support amfAR in its lifesaving mission," said amfAR CEO Jerome J. Radwin.

In compiling this year's list, Worth set out to find 100 nonprofits that have shown the greatest efficiency and effectiveness in advancing their missions and to see how those groups spend the money invested in them. The magazine reports: "(W)e are confident that the charities on this list will spend your money wisely and will do their best to change some of the grim facts of today's world that we all face."

The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, AIDS prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy. Since 1985, amfAR has invested nearly $190 million in support for its programs and awarded grants to over 1,900 research teams worldwide.
