Aethlon Medical Improves HIV Toxin Removal

Business Wire - October 31, 2002

LA JOLLA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2002--Aethlon Medical Inc. (OTCBB:AEMD) announced today that it has significantly improved the rate of removing HIV toxic viral proteins from HIV infected blood.

HIV produces copious amounts of toxic surface proteins known as gp120. Gp120 damages nerve cells and white blood cells involved in the body's natural immune defenses. The toxic activity of gp120 appears to be a major factor in the degradation of the immune system and the subsequent development of AIDS.

Aethlon indicated that AEMD-45, the company's lead treatment candidate now removes up to 90 percent of gp120 from HIV infected blood in 1 hour, almost 4 times faster than earlier systems in development. AEMD-45 also proved capable of removing up to 100 percent of the toxin in 4 hours, the equivalent time of a typical dialysis session. Aethlon expects to have updated data on whole HIV removal in the near future. AEMD-45 is part of Aethlon's expansive platform technology known as the Hemopurifier(TM).

Richard Tullis, Ph.D., Aethlon's chief scientific officer stated: "The significant improvement in our ability to remove the gp120 toxin should be recognized as important news for those who treat HIV and AIDS and the individuals who are infected with this virus."

The new data was derived as a result of ongoing testing of various antibodies when immobilized within the AEMD-45 Hemopurifier. In addition to analyzing toxin removal, the company takes into consideration commercialization issues such the costs and availability of antibody production to fulfill potential market requirements.

About Aethlon Medical

Aethlon Medical develops therapeutic devices that treat HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis-C, and other infectious diseases. In pre-clinical testing, Aethlon's lead product, AEMD-45 removed 55 percent of HIV from human blood in three hours and in excess of 85 percent in 12 hours. The AEMD-45 therapeutic device, like all product offerings from Aethlon Medical, is developed from an expansive platform technology known as the Hemopurifier(TM), which employs a proprietary method to increase the capability of FDA cleared artificial kidneys (dialysis cartridges) to remove targeted intoxicants from the blood. In the case of AEMD-45, dialysis cartridges are modified to mimic the immune system's response to clear infectious virus from circulation before healthy cells are infected. AEMD-45 is designed to fill the urgent need for new treatments that are effective in reducing viral load, decrease the likelihood of treatment resistance, and treat without the toxic side-effects associated with AIDS drugs.
