ZADAXIN Shows Direct Antiviral Effects On Cells Infected With Hepatitis B and HIV

Business Wire - October 31, 2002

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2002--SciClone Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:SCLN) today reported that ZADAXIN(R), in addition to previously observed immunological effects, for the first time has shown direct antiviral effects on cells infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in in vitro cultured cells. ZADAXIN is SciClone's lead immune system enhancer and is in multiple phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials for viral diseases and certain cancers.

The results of these in vitro studies were presented yesterday at the Therapies for Viral Hepatitis Conference in Boston. In the studies, human cells infected with HBV were treated with either ZADAXIN, lamivudine, or placebo and cells infected with HIV were treated with either ZADAXIN, AZT, or placebo. In both studies, cells treated with ZADAXIN showed reduced viral replication. This demonstrates for the first time that ZADAXIN has direct antiviral effects on HBV and HIV infected cells, in addition to its ability to stimulate the immune system.

Dr. Cynthia Tuthill, Vice President of Scientific Affairs of SciClone Pharmaceuticals, commented, "Taken together, these data demonstrate direct antiviral activity of ZADAXIN against HBV and HIV. This mechanism of action supports the exploration of ZADAXIN in the therapy of patients coinfected with HBV and HIV."

ZADAXIN has been approved for sale by the ministries of health in over 30 countries and is marketed in China and selected other countries outside the U.S. ZADAXIN has been administered to more than 10,000 patients in both clinical and commercial use, alone and in combination with antiviral and anticancer drugs, without producing any ZADAXIN related significant side effects or toxicities.

SciClone's strategic goal is to become a principal worldwide provider of Immune System Enhancers (ISE) both as monotherapies and as critical components of combination drug therapies for infectious diseases and cancer. SciClone's other drug development opportunities include an orally available ISE and products to address the protein-based disorder that causes cystic fibrosis.

This press release contains forward-looking statements including statements regarding the potential of ZADAXIN. Clinical and experimental data is not necessarily predictive of the efficacy and safety of ZADAXIN.
