Excerpt of Dr. Mati's Report on AIDS in Africa for Heifer International:

An HIV/AIDS Initiative fits well within the mandate of Heifer International. Involvement of Heifer International in AIDS prevention activities in Africa is in line with its mission of addressing hunger, poverty and environmental degradation. In Africa, HIV/AIDS is not only a consequence of poverty; it also is a root cause of poverty.

Consequently, prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS is central to an effective poverty-reduction strategy. Heifer International assistance can go a long way towards the breaking of the AIDS-poverty vicious circle.

Heifer International has a comparative advantage that should come handy in a rural based initiative such as the one proposed. In several respects, Heifer International's core mission and modes of operation can be taken advantage of in implementing an AIDS initiative. These include:

Heifer International's close working relationship with grass-root organizations, many of them involving women and located in rural areas;

The practice of "passing on the gift" which creates a vast network of groups and individuals that can facilitate the passing on of AIDS messages at relatively little additional cost;

Heifer International's focus on nutrition and income generation, which are crucial elements to longer survival of people living with AIDS.
