He is a former Rockefeller Foundation visiting scientist and Africa's leading expert on AIDS. While in Little Rock, Dr. Mati will present his studies on AIDS in Africa to the Heifer International their AIDS Initiative Plan, a strategic three-year operation designed to help alleviate the devastation that AIDS is causing African population. Heifer will continue with traditional livestock projects targeted at people living with AIDS and their families, and the most vulnerable AIDS victims, orphans.

An HIV/AIDS Initiative fits well within the mandate of Heifer International. Involvement of Heifer International in AIDS prevention activities in Africa is in line with its mission of addressing hunger, poverty and environmental degradation. In Africa, HIV/AIDS is not only a consequence of poverty; it also is a root cause of poverty.
Consequently, prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS is central to an effective poverty-reduction strategy. Heifer International assistance can go a long way towards the breaking of the AIDS-poverty vicious circle.
Heifer International has a comparative advantage that should come handy in a rural based initiative such as the one proposed. In several respects, Heifer International's core mission and modes of operation can be taken advantage of in implementing an AIDS initiative. These include:
