A Majority Of Physicians Now Turning To The Internet For Congress News On Medical Advances And Developments Says Nuvis Worldwide

Business Wire - November 5, 2001

MONTREAL--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 6, 2001--More than two thirds of the eleven thousand physicians participating in a recent survey said they rely on Internet and/or e-mail medical news services to keep abreast of developments emanating from medical conferences and other large medical meetings they do not attend.

Nuvis Worldwide, leaders in the use of technology to speed the communication of clinically relevant science to physicians, recently commissioned this survey in order to better understand the preferences and habits of physicians with respect to keeping up to date with data presented at major congresses.

"We were pleased to see that physicians now put e-mail and internet-based medical news services on a par with the traditional, printed, medical press when it comes to keeping up to date with congress news and developments," said Michele Fearon, COO of Nuvis Worldwide. "It's a testimony to the quality of congress news and reports offered by services such as Doctor's Guide and Medscape that more than twice as many physicians mentioned these services, and others like them, compared to the number who mentioned pharmaceutical company representatives/publications in this study. The results clearly show that our new PeerView FastCast services are now the tool of choice for getting clinically important science to key physicians, fast. And this whether the science is first presented at a congress, a satellite symposia or some other important venue."

"We are very excited about the prospect of sharing the findings of this study with our clients," she added, "A presentation of the results is theirs for the asking."

The study was conducted by P\S\L Research using its Instar(SM) Internet market research service. Over 11,000 physicians from a variety of specialties and countries participated by completing an online questionnaire within a 72-hour field period.

Electronic news services had, globally, a slight but statistically significant lead over the printed medical press with respect to the number of physicians relying on them for congress news and developments (68% vs. 62%). There was very little difference, however, between the numbers of physicians mentioning either of these two approaches in America (63% vs. 61%) and the European Union (65% vs. 66%).

Congress proceedings, whether electronic or printed, formed a second tier in terms of preferences with each mentioned by 40% of physicians globally.

The other two means used by a significant number of physicians to keep abreast of congress news were colleagues who attended the congresses of interest and pharmaceutical company representatives / publications. Globally, less than a third of participants mentioned either of these methods of keeping up to date (28% vs. 29%). In no major market was either of these mentioned by more than 35% of respondents.

"Physicians are more and more relying on electronic means to keep themselves up to date," added Michele Fearon. "While they of course still highly respect verbal reports from their colleagues returning from congresses, as well as the information provided to them by reps, they nevertheless increasingly prefer to use services like www.docguide.com, www.peerviewpress.com and professional association websites to get congress and symposia information first hand. Pharmaceutical marketers who know how to navigate this sea change will more quickly derive peak impact from their science, and that is precisely what we are dedicated to helping our clients achieve with our FastCast service."
