ViroLogic and Bristol-Myers Squibb Enter HIV Scientific and Educational Collaboration

Business Wire - November 2, 2000

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 2, 2000--ViroLogic, Inc. (NASDAQ: VLGC) today announced an agreement with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) to jointly educate physicians about HIV resistance testing and conduct important new drug resistance research.

Under the agreement, Bristol-Myers Squibb and ViroLogic will sponsor a series of Continuing Medical Education programs for physicians on the topics of HIV therapy and drug resistance. The intent of the programs is to have prominent academic and community-based clinicians, along with distinguished researchers from industry, present the most up-to-date scientific and clinical data on resistance testing and its role in patient management.

"Physicians are increasingly turning to drug resistance testing to manage HIV infection," said Bill Young, Chairman and CEO of ViroLogic. "Our collaboration will help prepare physicians to take advantage of this important new technology - to anticipate and respond to drug resistance, avoid ineffective drugs, and in many cases improve patient outcomes."

As part of the agreement announced today, ViroLogic will also collaborate with Bristol-Myers Squibb on retrospective and prospective scientific studies on HIV therapy and resistance. The studies will employ ViroLogic's PhenoSense(TM) HIV resistance test and will include research on Bristol-Myers Squibb HIV drugs Videx(R) (didanosine) and Zerit(R) (stavudine).

About ViroLogic

ViroLogic is a biotechnology company developing and marketing innovative products to guide and improve treatment of viral diseases. The Company's proprietary technology, called PhenoSense(TM), tests for drug resistance and susceptibility in viruses that cause serious diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

ViroLogic's first product, PhenoSense HIV, is a test that directly and quantitatively measures resistance of a patient's HIV to antiviral drugs. The test results provide physicians with important information to help select appropriate drugs for their HIV patients. The Company is also developing PhenoSense products for other viral diseases and intends to use the results of its PhenoSense tests and other clinical data to develop its Therapy Guidance System(TM) (TGS(TM)), an interactive database to help physicians guide patient therapy.
