Medisys Technologies, Inc. Supports the New Federal Needlestick Safety Prevention Act Passed by the House

Business Wire - October 5, 2000

BATON ROUGE, La. & FAR HILLS, N.J.--(BW HealthWire)--Oct. 5, 2000--Medisys Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: SCEP) enthusiastically supports the HR 5178 Needlestick Safety Prevention Act introduced congress by Rep. Cass Ballenger (R-NC) and Rep. Mayor Owend (D-NY) to amend the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to require the use of safer devices to protect from sharp injuries. The House passed the bill on Tuesday 10/3/00.

The new bill would also require employers to maintain a sharps injury log to contain, the type and brand of device involved in the incident; the department or work area where the exposure incident occurred; and an explanation of how the incident occurred. The information would be recorded and maintained in a way that would protect the confidentiality of the injured employees. The log would be an important source of data for researchers to determine the relative effectiveness and safety of devices now on the market and those that may be developed in the future.

"We applaud the by-partisan efforts of the House to implement the use of leading edge technology to safeguard our nation's health care providers," says Edward P. Sutherland, CEO of Medisys Technologies. "Medisys is committed to providing technologically advanced medical devices that meet and exceed national safety standards to provide superior patient care and ultimately, safety for the healthcare providers."

Medisys Technologies Inc. has successfully developed and had subsequently been granted FDA 510K clearance to market its patented CoverTip(TM) safety needle device which the company believes provides superior protection against accidental needlesticks.

CoverTip is used just as any standard syringe with insertion of the needle into the patient's skin and depression of the syringe plunger to inject the medicine. A micro-thin sheathe covers the tip of the needle after injection of the medical fluid. When the syringe plunger is pressed and the medicinal fluid injected, the plunger contacts an actuator that engages the sleeve that locks over and blunts the tip of the needle, providing protection prior to the removal of the needle from the patient's skin.
