The exhibit, entitled Women First, captures the hope, courage, and determination of women living with HIV. With every day's progress expressed vividly in each photograph, one thing shines through. Each of these women have their eyes on the future--some plan to continue their education, others enjoy motherhood, and each is taking steps towards independence in her life.
Women have traditionally been underrepresented in clinical trials. Women First originated as a clinical trial developed by Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to investigate HIV protease inhibitors exclusively in women, making it the first of its kind.
Sixteen of the women who took part in the Women First clinical trial agreed to be photographed by photographer Art Myers as a witness to their journeys with HIV. The photographs portray the mothers, wives, daughters, grandmothers, friends, and neighbors who are strengthening their communities and drawing upon the support of those around them. Their images convey a sense of peace, togetherness, faith, and the search for answers.
Myers' previous work includes photographic exhibits of women in an urban rescue mission and a study of breast cancer survivors. The latter series resulted in a book entitled "Winged Victory: Altered Images. Transcending Breast Cancer." Myers is also a physician specializing in public health and preventative medicine.
The Women's First exhibit will be on display at the Morris Museum from January 23rd through March 19th. The museum is located on 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown, New Jersey. There will be a reception celebrating the opening of the exhibit on Sunday, January 23rd, and photographer Art Myers will be on hand to answer questions regarding the exhibit.
