Metreon, which draws families and young people, was chosen to complement the youth-targeted theme of this year's event, "End the Silence: Listen, Learn and Live." World AIDS Day activities will take place in and around microsoft(R)SF on Metreon's second floor. The event will include live music, comedy and other entertainment, as well as on-site representatives from non-profit organizations funded by United Way of the Bay Area.
These organizations specialize in reducing the spread of HIV and AIDS through education and prevention efforts. This outreach effort is supported with the on-site presence of media partner 106 FM KMEL along with cable networks A&E, BET, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, MTV and The History Channel.
Since its inception 12 years ago, World AIDS Day has received the support of the World Health Organization, the United Nations and governments and communities around the world. It remains the only international day of coordinated action against AIDS.
"Metreon is honored to work with AT&T Media Services and the cable industry on this awareness-raising event," says Kari Novatney, Vice President and General Manager of Metreon. "Awareness and accessibility to information is what we all strive for on December 1. And with KMEL and Comedy Central coordinating the evening's entertainment, we know we have a program that will reach the Bay Area's young people."
"It is gratifying to be able to use our medium to hopefully prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS in the community that we serve," said Fred Yeries, Vice President/General Manager, AT&T Media Services-San Francisco Bay Area (a unit of AT&T Broadband and Internet Services.) "Through World AIDS Day, AT&T Media Services, along with our other great sponsors, is able to elevate AIDS awareness and focus attention on the need for research and education to prevent the spread of HIV."
AT&T Media Services, Metreon and 106 FM KMEL are sponsoring this Cable Positive World AIDS Day event in San Francisco. Each organization is leveraging its media power to promote awareness of AIDS and HIV through programming and promotions.
The goal of this local event is to enlighten and engage the Bay Area community with information about HIV and AIDS. Selected by AT&T Media Services for its community leadership and expertise, United Way of the Bay Area secured six of its funded agencies to be on hand from Noon to 8 p.m. to educate the public about their services as well as explain how United Way helps in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
