"A tremendous healing takes place when we remember and honor a loved one," said Richard Zaldivar, president and founder of The Wall/Las Memorias Project. "That is why we call this event Noche de Memorias, or Night of Memories. Tonight, we gather to share our love, our grief and our commitment to ending HIV and AIDS, not only in the Latino community, but everywhere."
The Noche de Memorias incorporates many of the religious traditions of the Latino community, including an ecumenical religious service and other expressions of spirituality and faith.
"The Noche de las Memorias is an opportunity to see ourselves as the Body of Christ," said Father Chris Rosales, a member of the Noche de Memorias planning committee and a teacher at Salesian High School. "This disease affects us all and we respond as the Church to comfort and support each other."
The Wall/Las Memorias Project is a Latino-focused organization and movement dedicated to AIDS education, emotional support and empowerment. Although one of its major goals is the construction of a memorial in Lincoln Park to honor those who have died of AIDS, its primary focus is the education and empowerment of Latino men.
