Former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer to Be Honored at Bay Area Non-Profit AIDS Organization Dinner and Auction

Business Wire - June 9, 1999

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1999--AIDS Resources, Information & Services (ARIS), a non-profit organization, will honor former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer for her contribution to AIDS prevention and support services for Santa Clara County at a formal dinner and silent auction on Friday, June 11.

Mayor Ron Gonzales will be on hand to help honor Hammer at the ARIS sponsored event being held at the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation. Items for auction include a three-night New York Extravaganza and Calvin Klein shopping spree, as well as sports memorabilia including a signed San Francisco 49ers football and a John Elway autographed football and jersey.

"The biggest challenge is making sure that the community understands that the AIDS epidemic is still a serious threat to public health," said Tom Myers, associate director of development for ARIS. "Unfortunately, too many people have been reading overly optimistic headlines. The reality is that AIDS is still an incurable, long-term and ultimately fatal disease. Most people in the AIDS community estimate that a cure or vaccine is still years, if not decades, away."

While there is an increasing hope for a cure, there is also a growing need for assistance through programs and services for those affected by AIDS/HIV and their families. This ARIS dinner and auction focuses on raising awareness and addressing the continuing need, as well as providing funding to support ARIS' vital role in the community.

As the AIDS epidemic is still very much a reality, so is the need for volunteers to help with vital ARIS programs such as providing food services, prevention education, fund raising, clerical help and other support services.

Tickets for the event are $125 per person with 600 people expected to attend. For those unable to attend the ARIS annual Spring event, donations can be made directly to ARIS. For further information or to purchase tickets to the event, call ARIS at 408/293-2747.

Founded in 1985, ARIS is the largest AIDS/HIV education and service agency in Santa Clara County. Through staff and volunteers, ARIS is able to provide services for the majority of Santa Clara County residents with AIDS, as well as for people who are HIV positive and their families. ARIS is a California non-profit, tax-exempt corporation.
