Available exclusively at medscape.com, the interactive "Drug-Drug Interactions and Medication Daily Scheduler," also known as the HIV/AIDS drug scheduler, returns a detailed and printable dosing schedule, thus helping to improve adherence by simplifying complex multidrug scheduling issues.
Once the desired regimen of medications is entered, the HIV/AIDS drug scheduler first identifies potential drug-drug interactions found among drugs commonly prescribed for HIV+ patients. The program then tailors dosing recommendations to patient preferences for waking, sleeping, and mealtimes. As a result, physicians are able to help HIV+ individuals in planning the task of scheduling the many medications they must take, as well as remove some of the obstacles to adherence in patients whose antiretroviral regimens may require them to take as many as 40 pills in one day.

The drug scheduler was developed and co-authored by two of the leading experts in the field, Stephen C. Piscitelli, PharmD, Coordinator of the Clinical Pharmacokinetics Research Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health, and Charles Flexner, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Infectious Disease, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The HIV/AIDS drug scheduler was designed as part of a dual-component program entitled "Scheduling Medications in HIV Disease." The first part is a one-hour CME program covering all of the complex issues surrounding HIV drug scheduling, and the second is the online HIV/AIDS drug scheduler. This CME program, available at no charge to participating U.S. physicians and pharmacists, is provided through the joint sponsorship of Medscape and Medical Education Collaborative (MEC), a nonprofit education organization. MEC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
