(BW) UCSF/Mount Zion Seeks Patients for Pain Management Study Evaluating Chili Pepper Treatment

BUSINESS WIRE; Wednesday December 10, 4:51 pm EST

SAN FRANCISCO--(BW HealthWire)--Dec. 10, 1997--People who are experiencing severe burning foot pain associated with HIV may participate in a UCSF clinical trial that is evaluating a treatment derived from chili peppers.

The study, conducted by Wendye Robbins, M.D., UCSF assistant clinical professor of anesthesiology, is ongoing and will determine whether treatment with high dose topical capsaicin -- the active ingredient in chili peppers -- is an effective remedy for this foot pain.

Capsaicin has been used in diluted form in an over-the-counter topical ointment. In the study, a dosage 100 times more potent than the over-the-counter cream will be given to participants.

Preliminary studies by Robbins at the UCSF/Mount Zion Pain Management Center have shown that several patients who experienced severe burning foot pain found relief when the medication was administered at the higher dose.

One side effect of high-dose capsaicin is that it can produce a burning sensation upon application. To counter that side effect, the treatment includes measures to eliminate pain from its administration.

The UCSF/Mount Zion Pain Management Center is seeking participants for the study. The procedure may take two to three hours every three to six months. There will be no charge to participants. Volunteers interested in the study should contact the Pain Management Center at 415/885-7246.
