At a time when health care continues to be out of reach for many residents of San Francisco, a unique collaboration has come together to provide needed health services that are free and easily accessible. The Glide Health Clinic is the result of more than a year's planning by Glide Church, Catholic Healthcare West-West Bay Region (CHW), Saint Francis Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center and the UCSF School of Nursing's Department of Community Health Systems.

Although health services exist in the community, Glide clients often find themselves in a cycle of emergency care that excludes primary and preventive care. The partnership's goal is to break that cycle of costly and ineffective emergency care, while boistering health in the community by providing free health services.

Following its official opening Sunday, the clinic will be open for business on Monday and Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. Hours will be expanded once the clinic is firmly established. Future services will include mental health care, counseling, acupuncture and non-traditional medical services.

Providing physician services will be Gregory Fung, MD of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Medical Center, who is donating his time. Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Medical Center also will coordinate follow-up care for Glide Clinic patients. UCSF nurse practitioner Grace Galzagorry, RN, MS, ANP, will direct the clinic's health services, while Glide staff will provide case management and clinic administration.

A $100,000 grant from St. Mary's and Saint Francis Foundations will support the initial six months of operation. Philanthropist John Roth has also donated $240,000 to help fund this project. In addition, Oceania Inc. has donated a software package that will provide state-of-the-art computerized medical records.

Adult primary care services to be provided include health screening, counseling and referral, patient education, health screening and referral to recovery programs.

Glide Free Health Care Clinic is a new and innovative model of philanthropy for the 21st century. Together a partnership has been created which integrates the clients of Glide's more than 40 programs with organizations which can provide highly trained professionals with the most advanced facilities and technical equipment.
