(BW) (APACHE-MEDICAL-SYSTEMS)(AMSI) Health Council of South Florida Contracts with APACHE for HIV/AIDS Disease Management

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Tuesday, 26 August 1997.

MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1997--APACHE Medical Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMSI) today announced an agreement with the Health Council of South Florida to provide services related to the Medicaid Outcomes Health Management Initiative ("the HMI Project") for HIV/AIDS patients.

The HMI Project is designed to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare provided to Dade County, FL Medicaid recipients with HIV/AIDS, through the innovative use of technology, medical treatment protocols, and the comprehensive coordination of care.

As part of the HMI Project, APACHE will implement its disease management model, which focuses on providing continuity and management of disease states across the healthcare continuum. APACHE's model includes: analysis of data and protocols to derive and validate Best Demonstrated Practices for quality and cost outcomes; identification of clinical, economic, and functional status measures to quantify the outcomes of HIV/AIDS patients on treatment protocols; and development of tools and strategies to support the use of best practice protocols.

Under the agreement, APACHE will propose key clinical outcomes measures, implement recommended treatment protocols for HIV/AIDS, and optimize models for drug treatment pathways. APACHE will also use its HIV Insight(R) database to validate Best Demonstrated Practice protocols.

The HIV Insight(R) database, acquired in January as part of APACHE's acquisition of the Health Research Network, contains comprehensive clinical and resource utilization information on over 7,500 HIV/AIDS patients, with more than 24 months of observation per patient.

The APACHE family of companies combines evidence-based medicine and knowledge-based consulting to deliver tools and techniques for clinical, financial, and operational performance improvement across the continuum of care. APACHE's data-driven solutions provide a strategic "blueprint" for performance improvement, helping providers and healthcare organizations to improve variations in practice patterns and reduce clinical costs.

APACHE patient management products and services give clients real-time, risk-adjusted clinical and financial information they need to manage care, especially for high-risk, high-cost patients. Health Outcomes Research provides clinical trial design services, research support for product marketing, and disease management programs. National Health Advisors focuses on strategy and management support services to improve the performance of hospitals and integrated delivery systems. Worldwide, over 600 healthcare organizations have used APACHE products and services to measure, monitor, and manage change.
