VANCOUVER, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 1997--

- Saliva Diagnostic Systems to begin aggressive sales campaign for Saliva-Strip(TM) HIV -

A rapid test that uses saliva to detect HIV antibodies will be marketed for professional use in the United Kingdom, medical diagnostics maker Saliva Diagnostic Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SALV) reported today. Saliva-Strip(TM) HIV recently received a certificate of free sale from the Department of Health there, allowing the test to be distributed for professional use within the UK and exported from there to other countries. The company intends to begin an aggressive sales campaign to introduce the rapid test to hospitals and clinicians throughout Great Britain, said Chief Executive Officer Kenneth McLachlan.

"We have also recently received a similar certificate for Hema-Strip(TM) HIV, a rapid whole blood test that detects HIV antibodies, and plan to market both products in the UK as reliable screening devices for HIV infection," said McLachlan. Both tests provide results in minutes without the use of special equipment, training or storage. Saliva-Strip, which is completely non-invasive, has a sensitivity and specificity of 99.4 percent. Hema-Strip, which uses a small drop of whole blood from a finger stick, has a sensitivity and specificity of 99.8 percent and 100 percent, respectively.

The company also plans to submit Stat-Simple(TM) pylori, a rapid whole blood test to detect Helicobacter pylori (a bacterium believed to cause peptic ulcers and gastric cancers) in the United Kingdom. Hema-Strip HIV has been approved for use and sale in Russia, while another rapid test, Sero-Strip(TM) HIV, has been approved in Russia, Brazil and India. The company plans to apply to other countries for regulatory approval to distribute its rapid test products.

Saliva Diagnostic Systems is a developer and manufacturer of medical specimen collectors and rapid tests for infectious diseases and certain other conditions, based in Vancouver, Washington with operations in Singapore and London. The company is currently developing rapid tests for Hepatitis A and Tuberculosis.

This press release contains forward-looking statements that involve a number of risks and uncertainties. Factors that could cause actual results to differ materially include the following: changes in demand for the company's products, the ability of the company to increase manufacturing capacity, the ability of the company to obtain regulatory approvals, success in technological advances and their implementation, cost and yield issues associated with production, the ability of the company to raise additional capital, and other risk factors listed in the company's Amendment No. 1 to the Registration Statement dated June 13, 1997.
