BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Thursday, 17 July 1997.
Recently, Home Access Health completed a purchase preference survey that shows behind the pharmacy counter placement inhibits sales. Over 85% of the people surveyed indicated that the product should be located in front on store shelves. Only 15% of the people surveyed indicated they would look for the product behind the pharmacy store counter.
"Purchasing this type of product can be very discomforting," said Sheryl Kravitz, Marketing Director for Home Access Health. "Having the product out in front on store shelves along with other products clearly makes it easier and less intimidating to buy."
A majority of people surveyed indicated that the product should be located nearby pregnancy tests and other diagnostics or in the condom section.
"It is important to remember that condom sales, as a category, took off only when retailers finally placed them out on the stores shelves," said James Kammann, Director of Sales for Home Access Health. "It's clear that if retailers do the same with our kits, we'll be able to help more people with our service."
Recent information published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and calculations provided by the Aaron Diamond Institute in New York indicate that early, aggressive treatment of HIV infections should be the standard rather than the exception and, if treated early and long enough, HIV infection may be theoretically curable.
"Early detection along with new treatment is literally helping to save lives that would have been lost just a few years ago," said Paul Kawata, executive director of National Minority AIDS Council. "We support any effort -- including home tests -- which help to increase awareness and encourage more people who might be reluctant to test otherwise."
Home Access Express (results in three days) and Home Access (results in about a week) allow people to test anonymously for HIV within the privacy of their own homes and get results by telephone. Home Access HIV tests are available by mail by calling 1 800 HIV-TEST and are carried in more than 18,000 drugstores throughout the US including: Brooks, Duane Reade, Eckerd Drug, Farmacias El Amal, Genovese, Osco, Phar-Mor, Revco, Rite Aid, Save-On, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.
