(ADVANCE) NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 21, 1996--The following is a statement from TIME Man of the Year David D. Ho, MD, Scientific Director, Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center Professor, The Rockefeller University:

My colleagues and I are greatly appreciative of this recognition.

Achievements in research do not belong to a single individual or institution. Our accomplishments not only reflect the efforts of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, but also of many other outstanding scientists and institutions active in HIV/AIDS research. While there is finally reason for optimism in the battle against HIV, much work remains to be done. These advances represent an improvement in treatment, not a cure. We have seen HIV stagger, but this tough foe has not been knocked down.

It is also important to remember that most people in the world, including many in the United States, cannot afford expensive therapies. Our ongoing commitment to AIDS research must include a re-doubling of our efforts in prevention, education, and development of an effective vaccine.

I hope that the scientific advances made in 1996 will inspire governments, research institutions, and foundations to increase their commitment to address the many unanswered questions that remain about preventing and treating HIV/AIDS.
