MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1996--Medical research into hormonal analogous treatments -- peptide therapy -- is expanding to encompass an array of diseases, according to Frost & Sullivan.

In its analysis, U.S. MARKET FOR SYNTHETICALLY DERIVED THERAPEUTIC PEPTIDES, the marketing consulting firm asserts that companies pioneering developments in the relatively young peptide industry will reap financial rewards for easing the suffering of millions of Americans suffering from prostate cancer, endometriosis, acromegaly, cardiovascular disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis.

Therapeutic peptides are available to patients suffering from various medical conditions. Chronic illnesses that are considered hormone dependent are a primary target of companies marketing peptide drugs.

Patients suffering from prostate cancer and endometriosis have been helped the most by therapeutic peptides.

Peptide products are expected to double by 1999, when as many as 11 new products are to appear on the market.

"In the United States, the potential increase in revenues for the therapeutic peptide market is tremendous," said Janice Gottschall, a medical analyst for Frost & Sullivan.

There are currently four peptide products expected to receive regulatory approval in the cardiovascular market, and the immunology market may have the most hopeful peptide to date.

A significant trend developing in the peptide industry is the emergence of an orally ingested medication. It is important to offer a patient a convenient medicine, and oral drugs have the highest patient-compliance ratio compared to injected and inhaled drugs. Another trend is toward longer-lasting doses.

Because the markets for well-known diseases are very competitive, peptide manufacturers are now finding that they must use aggressive marketing and educational programs in order to find commercial success.

This research by Frost & Sullivan details in length why some medical research and manufacturing companies stand to gain -- and some to lose -- peptide therapy market shares.
