(BW) (FROST-&-SULLIVAN-13) Autoimmune Disease Sufferers, Research Firms Would Benefit from Development of Medications

BUSINESS WIRE - 44 Montgomery St, 39th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104; Tel: (415) 986-4422; FAX: (415) 788-5335 - Wednesday, 13 November 1996.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1996-- Americans suffering from autoimmune diseases are dissatisfied with medications currently on the market and are demanding new treatments that do more than relieve symptoms, according to research by Frost & Sullivan.

U.S. AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE THERAPEUTIC MARKETS reports that more than 20 million people are afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, psoriasis, Type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, asthma, lupus, Graves' and inflammatory bowel diseases, Sjogren's syndrome and scleroderma.

For reasons yet unknown, instead of attacking only viruses and bacteria that threaten health, the immune system malfunctions and also attacks and destroys healthy tissue; the effects of these disorders are devastating to sufferers, who spend money on therapies that relieve symptoms but do nothing about the underlying cause of the disorder.

"Assuming a conservative price of $1,000 per patient per year," said medical analyst Mitch Murakami, "the revenue potential of the eleven autoimmune diseases covered in this report is $20 billion per year."

That potential is inducing new companies to embark on the long, expensive process to develop drugs offering the relief so desperately sought by patients. The drug approval process in the United States can take an average of 12 years to complete and cost up to $250 million.

The financial payoff can be astounding. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first new treatments for autoimmune diseases in 1993. Berlex Laboratories' Betaseron and Sandoz Pharmaceutical's Sandimmune were approved for multiple sclerosis and psoriasis, respectively. These two compounds generated revenues approaching $300 million in 1995.

Over the next three years, several new autoimmune disease therapies could receive regulatory approval for commercial sale and generate more than $1 billion annually. Currently, compounds to treat multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis are all undergoing FDA regulatory review.

One of the more intriguing developments is bioartificial pancreases for Type I diabetics, which could be implanted into patients, replacing lost insulin-producing cells. If successful in human clinical trials, the bioartificial pancreas would eliminate the need for multiple daily insulin injections and prevent long-term medical problems associated with Type I diabetes -- blindness and vascular disease.

This study by Frost & Sullivan concludes: "The autoimmune disease therapeutic products market offers enormous opportunities to companies that have sound technology and can develop safe, effective new treatments for these debilitating diseases. Firms that can develop safer, more effective treatments could reap the rewards of hundreds of millions in annual sales."

It details in length how and why some companies stand to gain -- and some to lose -- market shares. Its analysis provides significant strategic insight into the direction and velocity of the autoimmune disease therapeutic market; companies receive recommendations for strategic action when purchasing this report, as well as a reliable source of continuing research by an international consulting firm dedicated to defining market problems, needs and opportunities.
